"Chic" Magazine Cover

"Chic" Magazine Cover

Project Description:
This project was to create an magazine cover for a fake company called “Chic.”  The project was to use primarily typography and understand layout  and placement design.

I decided that I wanted to do a digital painting of a futuristic robot/cyborg.  Because this is a magazine cover, I added a cloudy atmosphere background so I can add text, designs, etc.  After I imported my image to Illustrator, I then added the text.

Mazda Annual report

Mazda Annual report

Project Description:This project was to create an annual report for a company.  But there was a spin.  We had to work with a partner.  The purpose was to give the students a dose of the real-world working relationship.  With this partner, one must become the Art Director and the other a  production designer (vice-versa).  So it was a total of 2 different company. First as an Art Director, we must choose a company and make sketches of the layout and design the logo for it.  It is then given to my partner who will be the production designer to design it.

Quote Poster Design

Quote Poster Design

Project Description:
This project was to find a quote of our choice and use it in a way that will have two different meanings to it.  We would have to incorporate typography and imagery to visualize the intended purpose.  I chose the J. Robert Oppenheimer’s famous quote “I become of death, the destroyer of worlds.”

I wanted to make these two different images to send a powerful meaning yet a unique message to the viewers, so that by visually seeing it, they would understand it at a glance.  I used red color for “Death” because that is the key word of the quote, so using a red color will make the word as the main point.

James Blunt’s “Your Beautiful” Expressive Typography design

James Blunt’s “Your Beautiful” Expressive Typography design

Project Description:This project was to use the lyric from a song and express its meaning using typography.  We had to design a fold(s) with it as well.

I knew that the song was emotional that expresses love, beauty, sadness, and a bit of humor.  I had to be careful choosing what type of font I would put into my piece.  I wanted to use serif that would work on words that would have more of a bold statement.  I used curvier fonts for the high and low notes.  And using San serif for the more of the humor, etc.

Library Poster Design

Library Poster Design
Project Description:
This project was to create a library poster for the Marshall-Lyon County Library.  The task was simple.  We could use any media and or medium of our choice.  I decided to do a digital painting using a tablet to do a painting.  In this case, I used Photoshop to paint the entire artwork.  For the type, I then imported into InDesign to insert the type.

I wanted a child  in the center as the mainpoint and is up after bedtime reading his book.  Because Children are excellent imaginators, I had to include monsters in the background.  I thought it would be a great way to show a child’s imagination.

HP Logo Design

HP Logo Design
Project Description:
This project was part of the annual report.  In this case, this project was part of the art director’s duty to design the logo for the annual report itself and  then will get handed off to the production designer to design the rest of the layout.

I chose HP as the company.  For the logo redesign, I wanted a futuristic feel to it.  I not only created one but two logos for it. I wanted to explore and see how I can make the same initial logo feel different at two different attempts.  I used a lot of gradients to make the feel of the logo stand out and make it futuristic.  For the background, I just wanted to make a simple yet a well designed background to pop out the logo.  I chose brown and a 80% black.  I then added subtle swirls design to make the design flow and pleasing to the eye.

"EverLasting Summer: Casual Patio Furniture" Website Design

"EverLasting Summer: Casual Patio Furniture" Website Design
Project Description:
This project was to create a website for a fake commercial company based on Schneidermans Furniture (www.schneidermans.com).  Working in teams of two, we were responsible for gathering all information and resources necessary to complete the site.

In this case my partner Allysan Gronseth  and I wanted to create a furniture store solely on patios.  We did some sketches and came up with the name Everlasting Summer: casual patio furniture.   We wanted the website to look and feel like the outdoors.  So green became the primary color.   I wanted the website to look simple and clean and easy to navigate.  We split the job by Allysan designing the logos and banners and I designed the layout and the interface.

American Red Cross brochure

American Red Cross brochure
Project Description:
This project was to create a brochure of a company of our choosing.  It can have as many folds as your want.  We also had to include a die cut (which was our primary goal) and layout design.

After doing research, I decided to choose American Red Cross as my company.  I began doing sketches for the initial layout.  I decided to do a 4 fold layout.  For the cover, I decided that I wanted a die cut and the American Red Cross logo to show through to the front.  I used a lot of opacity effects by softening up the edges in the pictures.  After I did the initial layout (pictures, borders, etc) I imported the Photoshop file into InDesign to put the type in.

"Affordable : All About Cars" Magazine

"Affordable : All About Cars" Magazine
Project Description:
This project was to create an magazine to show primarily layout design.  We had to do a five 2 page spread on a specific theme. In this case I chose cars as my theme.  I decided to do the top 5 most affordable small sized cars.

We had to make sure the use of image and the use of typography complements each other.  By using different kinds of fonts, and playing with the placement of the text, the magazine came out solid.
